Epub May Fasinu PS 1, et al. Bergamaschi MM , et al. Epub Feb 9. Don't let the holidays ruin your digestive system!

Here are a few of my own personal tips to keep the belly bloat away We all know when the big one's coming, the big dinner! The day of a big meal, start out the day by drinking hot lemon water in the morning, followed by 1 tablespoon of organic apple cider vinegar, diluted in an 8oz glass of water.

This practice will help keep your digestive tract strong and on point. Throughout the day, you can also drink hot ginger tea, fresh or dried, both work great at warming and strengthening your digestive system. During the meal, eating strategically can help avoid digestive upset. As a general rule, if you are eating fruit at any point, it's best to have it 30 minutes before a meal. Otherwise, it will sit on top of all your heavy foods, creating a major traffic jam in the digestive tract.

During your meal, eat your protein and carbs first, and your veggies last. Practice portion control, it is always best to have a pause between smaller meals, than to eat a very large one all at once.

This is often overlooked and is a major cause of acid reflux and digestive upset. Your digestion begins in your mouth, so whatever doesn't happen there, becomes the work of the internal organs, and remember, they are already over-worked during the holidays. Give them a break. Cold drinks and food are often the culprit of chronic, long term digestive disorders. This is because cold constricts, like tightening a water hose where nothing gets through. Give your intestines some warmth instead. Warm drinks help open up and allow things to flow smoothly.

Ginger tea, cinnamon, basil, licorice, or even just hot water with lemon are all helpful to drink before or after a meal. As tempting as it may seem, it's a terrible idea. Your body needs to be upright to digest properly and laying down too soon will put you at risk for acid reflux and other esophageal disorders. If you tried your best with the above suggestions and you still feel bloated, heavy, sluggish or just plain full, try these tips: Move - take a walk, even if its just around the house.

Walking increases peristalsis, the intestinal flow in your digestive tract and can help ease the bloating. Heat Pad - on the belly, helps to ease the discomfort. You can also put hot water in a water bottle if you don't have a heat pad. Rub Your Belly - in a circular clockwise motion to coax the digestive flow if you have diarrhea, counter-clockwise to detain the flow. Ayurvedic Remedy - boil some water, add a pinch of cumin powder, turmeric powder and dried ginger and let it steep for about 5 minutes.

If you don't have these ingredients, you can try cinnamon, chamomile, lavender, mint or basil. If you have digestive symptoms that don't resolve, you may have a more serious condition.

I encourage you to contact your health provider if you have any concerns. I am available as well if you have questions or concerns or if you'd like to set up an appointment to get your digestive tract on track!

It's that time of the year when we need a little extra boost for our energy and immune systems. Cold and flu season are lurking around, use food as medicine and get ready with this yummy and easy tonic: Blend all ingredients and store in a glass jar with lid and drink throughout the day. Use organic ingredients for best results. This drink is delicious and boosts your immune system to help fight off pathogens.

I recently fought off a cold in one day with this drink. Iquitos is located at the basin of the Amazon Rainforest. Over pharmaceutical drugs come from plant-derived sources. As a healer who works with plant medicine, you can imagine my excitement to travel to the Amazon. The invitation came from a colleague at Emperor's College, where I'm completing my Doctoral degree.

This colleague just completed her Capstone research on combining Acupuncture with Ayahuasca for the treatment of Depression, and designed a retreat for some of her patients in Iquitos, Peru.

I came along for the retreat, with plans of treating patients daily in between other healing modalities, while also learning more about plant medicine from the Amazon region. The jungle experience was unlike anything I've ever experienced.

I had the honor of working with Shipibo shamans, who offered enlightening spiritual, as well as practical, insight. I participated in traditional ceremonies with them, and had an enriching learning experience.

I performed a couple of treatments, but mainly I worked with plants. I completed multiple plant diets, plant diets facilitate healing and offer knowledge and wisdom for those who decide to work with them.

Plant diets are often a part of a healer's initiation into working with plants and the healing arts. The dietary items often included juice fasts, superfood smoothies and fresh, local and organic produce, grains and legumes.

Other visitors were completing gallbladder flushes, liver detoxes, fasting and other plant diets, while participating in medicine ceremonies. I was both amazed and impressed with the nutritional resources that were available, and how much healing was taking place all around me.

There is something very special about the jungle, especially when you can slow down enough, isolate yourself and just be. It was a very profound journey for me to be able to feel the power of the jungle and the plants all around me. It is no wonder so many people are flocking to jungle retreats, they soothe and center the soul.

If there was anything I took home with me, it's that a connection to Pachamama Madre Tierra, Mother Earth is so important for sustaining the physical and spiritual body. Illness and disease often arise because we have lost this connection.

How do we do that in such a fast paced world? Certainly, things like getting out in nature, and creating rituals can help, as can incorporating plant-based foods into our diet as much as possible. I like to explore practices and rituals to keep this connection ongoing, and it is part of my healing practice when working with patients. I will be of service through a new lens, and armed with new tools. I am honored and ready to put this new knowledge to work. There are a multitude of ways to heal, if we can just get outside the box and explore a little.

Miracles are just waiting to happen. I hear a lot about the journeys my patients take when on my treatment table. Some go into far off dream lands, some have conversations with their spirit guides, some see rainbows of colors punctuated with vivid light shows, and others journey into their hearts.

It is not often talked about, but acupuncture treatments are also spiritual quests. Acupuncturists work with unseen energy and often this energy initiates very deep emotional healing, and may jumpstart creativity. It seems that is the type of journey local writer Abel Salas of the news publication Brooklyn and Boyle experienced during one of his treatments with me.

I had the pleasure of treating Abel a few weeks ago, after which we sat down for an interview, good food and conversation. I am beyond humbled and honored to have been the subject of his latest experimental article. This piece was a beautifully written account of a person's healing journey from grueling bike ride in the summer heat, to heartache, and beyond.

You can read the article online, and also be able to pick up a print copy in your local coffee shop or art gallery around the East Side of town. I have been gearing up for launching my acupuncture and holistic health practice. After passing board exams, there was a lot of behind the scenes work being done to be able to finally launch.

I have two locations in Highland Park, and maybe more in the future. Please book soon to reserve your space. With Spring in full swing, I figured it was time for an update in my Acuvida world A very long 6 years!

California Acupuncture Licensing Exam, a board exam administered by the California Acupuncture Board, the governing body over licensed acupuncturists in California. This exam MUST be successfully passed in order to practice acupuncture in the wonderful state of California. I took an online review class, and was part of an amazing study group, two key things that helped me pass.

Oh, and I pretty much sequestered myself in my home for those 3 months prior to the exam; doing nothing but studying for hours, yoga, meditation, eating, studying some more and repeating this everyday up until the exam It takes about a month to get those results I am waiting to receive my license in the mail to practice.

I am waiting to receive my license number to apply for malpractice insurance, apply for an NPI number and waiting for this number for a whole bunch of other things. The CAB states that it can take weeks to receive the license in the mail, it's only been 2 so far. I have passed 2 out of 4 so far! Lastly, I am also in the process of setting up my business. As Healthcare Practitioners, we are also business owners and that involves a whole other set of skills and legalities that can get confusing and downright frustrating at times.

Luckily, I had great business and marketing training in undergrad and many resources available to aid my business savvy. Here's hoping that all goes smoothly! I also keep reflecting on why I am on this path, and the journey that has led me to where I am. It was rough, it was tough and it has been worth it so far. I absolutely love the feeling when a patient tells me they are feeling better, or that they are making healthier choices after a treatment or consult with me.

Like one of my mentors would say, "You feel like a million bucks! This course will allow me to delve deeper into another form of the healing arts and another passion of mine, all in the name of healing and wellness. I get this question pretty often and I love it!

The truth is that I have been treating patients since last year! As a Master's student in the Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine program, there are several levels and requirements to graduate and qualify to sit for any licensing examination. In California, the requirements are:.

What this means, is that in addition to classroom instruction, there are several hundred hours of clinical training that must be completed and this is all done in a clinical setting with actual patients and with Licensed Doctors and Acupuncturists. Observation Level - Observe and assist with treatments, history taking, vital signs. Supervised Practice - treat patients under the supervision of a Licensed Acupuncturist and Clinical Supervisor.

Independent Practice - formulate diagnosis, treatment plan and execute treatment plan independently, but with the approval of a Licensed Acupuncturist and Clinical Supervisor. Besides Acupuncture, in Chinese Medicine we use other treatment modalities as well, such as: If you would like more information, have questions or would like to reach out to schedule a treatment, or if you have a story to share, please don't hesitate to contact me via email, I would love to hear from you!

I've been making this yummy dessert at home and I'm finally going to share the recipe. It's so easy and satisfies that sweet tooth, without the guilt!

I prefer the Trader Joe's brand of Coconut Cream, it's the silkiest, creamiest of the ones I've tried. I like to flash fry them with a high flame, but you must stir frequently. Once your peppers are baked and soft, and your string beans are nice and brown, you are ready to serve and enjoy!

You can also play with this recipe and modify the stuffing with any of your choice. You can also use a different side, such as asparagus, broccoli or mushrooms, or even a vegetable medley. My first experience with Acupuncture was when I became diagnosed with Lupus in I had been ill for months, before I finally figured out what was wrong with me.

I fell into a very deep depression. I had no medical insurance and I felt my situation was hopeless. I researched day and night on the disease; I'd read about people who took the medication prescribed by their doctors, only to find themselves getting worse by the side effects.

It was scary, to say the least. Finally, after much research and coercing by my mother, I tried Acupuncture. I made an appointment with Michael Fox at Silverlake Acupuncture and from that first treatment, something in me changed forever. I finally had faith that I would be able to feel better, every day…and I did. Acupuncture touched me deeply.

I felt as though it was my mission to share my experience with the world…I felt that this was one secret everyone should know. Career-wise, I was no longer feeling fulfilled with the year run I had in the fashion industry. I knew this was my calling: I wanted to make people feel better, the way that I had felt better. I wanted to inspire others to have faith in healing again, because I had almost lost mine. Today, my health has drastically improved. I still feel that same drive to inspire others, even just a fraction of what I have been inspired by the healers I have had the great fortune of meeting.

My passion and interest in Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine run deep. I would love to delve further into the art of this medicine and be able to learn, observe and absorb as much as possible. I feel that going on this trip will help to bring me closer to a more thorough and fundamental understanding of the medicine from a different perspective. I find it particularly important to learn about the medicine directly from the source, and from a place that truly practices Traditional Chinese Medicine.

It has been a very emotional couple of weeks. In particular this week. Protests, racial wars, violence, political injustices and of course, our healthcare system, which always concerns me.

It's affected me, as I'm sure it has many others on a global scale. However, this is a time to hold it together and unite as a whole for the betterment of our lives, our communities and humanity, in general. Because after all, we are ONE.

Instead of just going on social media rants, I decided to contribute my knowledge to you here today, to provide solutions. Because we need our soldiers to stay healthy, and this is my role as healer. So, have you heard of Diabetes? November is Diabetes Awareness Month.

November is also the beginning of the Holiday season, and with that a lot of eating and drinking and being merry. Diabetes has become very common…even I recently got told I was pre-diabetic by my doctor. How's that for awareness…thanks November!

Friends and family were shocked, they told me "but you eat so healthy! This is not a death sentence and it doesn't mean that because you're Native, Black or Latino you're getting Diabetes.

It just means we need to take extra precautions to avoid it. They're not so bad, actually. So here ya go:. Diabetes Mellitus is a condition in which the body does not properly metabolize sugar. This is usually due to the pancreas not producing enough or efficient insulin. Insulin is a hormone that controls blood sugar levels.

With the insulin unable to control blood sugar levels, the result is excess sugar in the blood stream, or hyperglycemia. The most prominent symptoms are excess thirst, frequent urination, prolonged wound healing, and circulation problems leading to numbness and tingling of the hands and feet. Complications include blindness, heart disease, kidney failure and neuropathies.

Diabetes is not something to take lightly. Avoiding or limiting sugar, especially processed sugar - as I stated before, Diabetes is a condition that involves too much sugar in the blood stream. Eating frequent smaller meals throughout the day - I'm sure you've heard this one before.

However, it's especially harmful to go long periods without eating, because as I mentioned, Diabetes is affected by the digestive process. By eating frequent smaller meals throughout the day, as opposed to one or two large meals spread widely apart, your pancreatic secretions, such as insulin, are much more efficient and can work properly to maintain the balance in your sugar levels. Eat a low-fat diet high in complex carbohydrates - a diet rich in complex carbohydrates such as unrefined grains, vegetables and legumes and low in fat can restore the proper functioning of the pancreas and bring insulin and therefore, sugar levels back into balance.

Exercise - exercising for about minutes per day, times per week has significant benefits. I know I don't need to tell you, because you already know weight management, heart disease prevention, stroke prevention, boosts immunity, anti-aging, etc.

In diabetic patients, it has shown to improve their circulation, but it can also help to prevent neuropathies. Plus, it makes you feel awesome! Another one with countless benefits that I'm sure you already know.

I have already incorporated all of these into my daily life. It's not that bad and it's not that hard. It just takes a little commitment and discipline. Start today or start tomorrow, but just do it! Cannabis is thought to sharpen up T-cells, which helps them spot and kill viruses — essential for HIV patients. Research into the herpes virus has found that some cannabis compounds stop infected, foreign cells from replicating inside the body.

Human trials have identified that these compounds improve insulin sensitivity. Cannabis has been used as an alternative medicine for headaches for hundreds of years, up until the herb was banned in the 20th century. Not all headaches are the same, however tension headaches and migraines are often medicated successfully through marijuana. High-THC strains ease headaches by giving the user a euphoric boost, letting them forget about the pain, whereas high-CBD strains work on reducing pain perception in the endocannabinoid system.

THC is a potent analgesic when microdosed, and in such quantities the hallucinogenic chemical will not make you high. The pain-relieving properties of CBD are also well-documented.

CBD is not considered to have psychoactive effects in the normal sense, although some argue that the mood-influencing effects are technically psychoactive. Some patients find that larger doses of THC actually increase pain. If using cannabis to treat pain, opting for one-to-one strains that have balanced concentrations of CBD and THC are more powerful than those with lopsided ratios.

In fact, in the United Kingdom, Multiple Sclerosis patients are able to access a cannabinoid medicine that treats pain and spasticity. Sativex, which is manufactured by GW Pharmaceutical, consists of equal amounts of the two cannabinoids. You should always consult a doctor well-versed in marijuana before attempting to self-medicate and adding a strain to your treatment plan, but these strains are thought to be helpful:.

Child epilepsy patients and their parents are enjoying a new lease of life thanks to the development of cannabis medication — a variety of non-psychoactive and THC-containing oils are benefitting patients with rare disorders to an extent that current treatments have been unable to. Now, a systematic review into the effect of medical cannabis on childhood epilepsy has produced results overwhelmingly in favor of the plant.

A number of previously untreatable and life-threatening conditions are now being successfully combatted. The team, led by Emily Stockings, considered 30 observational studies and six randomized controlled trials in the overall review. The paper showed that non-psychoactive cannabidiol CBD was especially useful in treating various types of childhood epilepsy.

With users unable to get high from using CBD, these forms of cannabis treatment are more viable for pediatric patients than THC options.

A recommendation of 20mg CBD daily for every 20kg of body weight was given by the review, which showed that the compound reduced epileptic seizures among participants by at least 50 percent. Around three-quarters of epileptic conditions can be effectively treated through mainstream medicines such as valproate.

However, for patients who cannot find relief with existing treatments, options are limited. Thankfully, medical cannabis is helping many of those who traditional medicine has left out. In the past decade, several stories of child patients seeking medical cannabis treatment have hit the headlines, many of them for epilepsy — CNN even produced a documentary on the subject. In , the United Kingdom, which has not enacted any medical cannabis legislation, gave a six-year-old child epilepsy patient special permission to be treated with medical marijuana.

While there are many success stories with cannabis products in the United States, some families have been taken to court for using medical marijuana. One such example is Alexis Bortell, The federal prohibition of cannabis has stopped Bortell from travelling with her cannabis meds, which stop seizures.

The government has taken umbrage with this, hence the lawsuit. Stockings argues that the research has is piling up to show that medical cannabis can be safely used to treat another of rare disorders. More studies must be carried out to confirm these effects and provide clarity for the most unusual of cases, but the findings are encouraging.

Frustratingly, while the Sydney research was relatively comprehensive, only one in six of the studies were of clinical trials involving placebo treatments , the rest was merely observational research. Observational research has a reputation for being less reliable than clinical research. For a study to carry true weight, the tests must be double-blinded, placebo-controlled and randomized. With the Controlled Substances Act still classing cannabis as a Schedule I drug with no medicinal value, it is difficult for the required research to be conducted.

Researchers have to wade through the bureaucracy stifling studies on cannabis. Finding patients willing to be studied on and accessing federal funds are two of the trickiest obstacles for researchers to overcome.

This is particularly the case for children with epilepsy. Growing up, you perhaps had a cold glass of milk at school or before you went to bed in the evenings, thanks to its health benefits — a great source of calcium, milk is fantastic for bones. However, what milk has traditionally never been helpful for is helping with anxiety, stress and physical pain. However, that could be about to change, courtesy of a brand new CBD milk product. Relax by Rawligion is an intriguing hemp-based organic milk, infused with CBD oil.

Many food and beverage companies have tried to muscle in on the CBD market, and the dairy industry is proving no exception. In addition to easing pain and relieving stress, Relax is also an effective sleep agent. This milk is superb for your all-round health, and contains hemp seeds, coconut oil, vanilla, dates and cashew nuts as well as CBD. Rawligion development consultant and psychotherapist, Michael Isted, has said that the health benefits of CBD were the key as to why the company decided to make an infused milk.

Pain perception, sleep cycles, mood and immune response are all regulated by the ECS. The ECS is made up of millions of cannabinoid receptors and proteins known as endocannabinoids. These receptors are found all over the body, although many — and particularly the CB1 receptors — are situated in the brain and the nervous system.

The medical potential of CBD is no longer just being realized by the cannabis community. Lawmakers in many states have passed legislation permitting the compound or the cannabis plant entirely, while the World Health Organization WHO recently stated that cannabidiol has no abuse potential. The federal government even has a patent on CBD as a neuroprotectant and antioxidant. The CBD in Relax is the main reason why the product is so beneficial, however the other ingredients also offer plenty.

This sounds pretty tasty, but just how effective is Relax? Unsurprisingly, Rawligion founder John Taba says that Relax works, and that many customers have contacted the company about the calming effect of the milk. However, to get the most from it and the specific results you desire, Taba recommends drinking carefully. The University of Colorado is investigating the efficaciousness of CBD oil in treating eczema and psoriasis.

Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune disease which causes rapid skin cell production and inflammation. The super-fast production of skin cells means they reach the surface of the skin too early. The accumulation of these unready skin cells results in raised, patchy skin that has a scaly and silvery appearance. Psoriasis is painful and itchy, with patients left in discomfort due to inflammation and swelling. Psoriasis patients are more likely to develop psoriatic arthritis and mental health complications.

Just under one in three psoriasis patients end up with the former. The pain, fatigue and insomnia caused by psoriasis is an unhelpful triumvirate which contribute to poor mental health. Eczema is an umbrella term used to refer to a multitude of skin conditions with symptoms of dry and itchy skin. More than 30 million Americans have some kind of eczema, equating to more than 10 percent of the population.

Skin inflammation can occur on any part of the body, but the red rashes and irritation is typically most common inside the elbows, behind the knees and on the face, hands and feet. Children are often more affect than adults. Scratching eczema-affected areas just makes matters worse, as the skin becomes raw, swollen and hence more sensitive.

While not entirely certain, doctors have reached a consensus that eczema results from an overreaction of immune cells located in the skin. Pollen and soap can spark the inflammation which causes this unwanted immune response, in addition to pet dander.

There is no cure for eczema with steroids, the most commonly prescribed medication, only able to manage symptoms. Such treatments have varied success rates and often have side effects. In recent times, CBD oil has emerged as a popular treatment for both psoriasis and eczema, thanks to its interactions with the endocannabinoid system ECS. The ECS was discovered in the s, and scientists have found that the network of chemicals and receptors is in charge of regulating inflammation, pain, mood, sleep, appetite and crucially — in the cases of eczema and psoriasis — immune system function.

The endocannabinoids found in the ECS are naturally-produced chemicals which bare a likeness to the cannabinoids found in cannabis — CBD is an example of a non-psychoactive cannabinoids.

Receptors are present in cells all over our body, including the skin, hence why cannabinoids are proving such an interesting field of research for those studying skin conditions.

This is what enables cannabinoids to work as anti-inflammatories. It is the overactivity among immune cells in the skin that causes inflammation symptoms for those with eczema. The cannabidiol instructs immune cells to slow down skin cell production and reduce inflammation levels.

Consumers have plenty of choice with cannabis products nowadays, especially for treating skin conditions. Topicals infused with CBD are available in all 50 states while some legalized states also stock products with a mixture of CBD and psychoactive — but potent anti-inflammatory — THC. Hemp seed oil can also help to calm down inflammation.

But how do you know which cannabis product is most suitable for your condition, and how much should you apply per day? Recreational and advanced medicinal states stock an array of cannabis creams, lotions, balms and salves infused with THC in addition to CBD. Not all states have legalized cannabis and the plant is still banned federally.

These hemp-based CBD-only creams tackle skin conditions effectively. Thinking of trying one to clear up your eczema or psoriasis?

Here are some top tips:. Hemp seeds are a great source of nutrition and south-east Asian cultures have used them as a staple part of their traditional medicine for hundreds of years. Hemp seeds are rich in omega-3 and omega-6, two important fatty acids, and these facilitate healthy skin and cell production. Amino acids are also present in hemp seed oil. Certain CBD and cannabis creams will also contain hemp seed oil, so remain aware of this and refer to labelling and product descriptions.

CBD-only and hemp seed products are legal everywhere since they are derived from industrial hemp and can be purchased in grocery stores and online. The same goes for hemp-based beauty products. It is thought that sublingual consumption of CBD oil, via capsule, tincture or as part of a beverage is effective at combatting psoriasis, eczema and other skin complaints, yet more studies are needed to confirm this.

If you are unable to take CBD oil orally, you can also apply the skin as a topical, providing the product is alcohol-free. Psoriasis-related symptoms can also be managed with CBD oil. We mentioned earlier that psoriasis patients are often more depressed and anxious than those without the condition, while others are more prone to insomnia and arthritis.

CBD can treat this quartet of symptoms and more. Many treating skin conditions with CBD have found the all-encompassing effects of the compound transformative on their quality of life. Interestingly, some cannabis smokers have experienced worsened skin conditions, perhaps due to the free radicals in the smoke.

If you are keen to get your cannabinoids by inhaling, consider switching to dry herb or e-liquid vaping. Psoriasis and eczema sufferers may finally have a genuine solution to their conditions which works over time. The more often you use cannabis, the higher your tolerance will be — and unfortunately that makes marijuana a more expensive hobby or medication. But fortunately, through cannabinoid cycling, you can reduce your tolerance to cannabis without having to take total breaks from the herb.

Many people say that having a break from cannabis now and again is important, for both health and tolerance purposes. For medicinal users in particular, the last thing you want to do is stop taking your medication and risk symptoms returning. Withdrawal symptoms may be a concern for recreational users, who would perhaps prefer to micro-dose than take a cannabis sabbatical. However, there may be a way of stopping the body from building such a high tolerance to cannabis in the first place, which would solve all these problems in an instance.

That method is cannabinoid cycling. If you are consuming lots of THC on a regular basis, then eventually the compound becomes saturated in the body, meaning you build a tolerance to it. Scientists have found that CB1 receptors become less sensitive to THC and are not as concentrated after overconsumption.

Some scientists argue that there are advantages to developing a tolerance to cannabis. Certain parts of the body are more susceptible to cannabis tolerance than others, according to pre-clinical research. For now, these observations are merely observations — only through proper trials will we acquire a more complete understanding of cannabis tolerance and its effects on the body. Anybody who has used cannabis several times will know whether cannabis is effective for them or not.

However, with regular use, that intensity will fall due to tolerance. However, there are thought to be therapeutic effects to building a tolerance to cannabidiol. Indeed, first-time CBD users are often advised to start with small doses and steadily increase them as they become familiar with the compound and its impact. Clinical trials into CBD-based drug Epidiolex, manufactured by GW Pharmaceuticals, have involved starting with small doses and working up, with the aim of building tolerance.

Although, it stands to reason that any substance used consistently over an extended period of time could become less effective, both physically and psychologically. If you are experiencing issues with your cannabis tolerance, then help is at hand. You could choose to take a week-long break from marijuana — or slightly shorter or longer should you wish. Stopping your cannabis intake for even a week can be problematic, however, with mental withdrawal a common symptom among marijuana users.

This can cause anxiety, irritation, mood swings and similar complaints. If you can get into a routine where you regularly take tolerance breaks though, cannabis abstinence becomes much more manageable. Cannabinoid cycling is as simple as it sounds — you cycle your cannabis consumption, changing from high-CBD to high-THC bud as needed. Changing from high-THC to high-CBD treatment — and vice versa — is essentially trying a new treatment plan when the old one has stopped working.

Having a break from a compound such as THC allows the body to reset. THC makes a simplistic engagement with receptors as a partial cannabinoid receptor agonist. It also helps the body maintain homeostasis. The ECS achieves this by instructing neurotransmitters and hormones now to respond to various situations. The ECS regulates mood — and can perhaps treat anxiety and depression as a result — as well as sleep patterns, speed of metabolism and immune system function.

These endocannabinoids link up with cannabinoid receptors in the same manner that THC does. THC replaces these endocannabinoids when we take in marijuana. It is these receptors which are responsible for inducing feelings of hunger and hallucinogenic effects. By replacing endocannabinoids, THC changes the biochemistry of the endocannabinoid system, explaining the powerful effects that the compound has on our bodies and minds.

Cannabidiol struggles to bind with the most abundant cannabinoids receptors in the ECS. Although we are aware that instead of taking the place of endocannabinoids, CBD facilitates the release of them to promote balanced biochemistry in the ECS.

Essentially, when taking CBD you are telling the body to produce endocannabinoids; when taking THC you are telling it to stop. Dr Ethan Russo is an expert in the endocannabinoid system, having researched the regulatory network extensively in effort to determine whether imbalances are responsible for any physical and mental ailments. He is the Medical Research Director at Phytecs and is a qualified neurologist. Understanding how CBD works in the ECS is essential to understanding why the compound can treat so many conditions, even when they are seemingly unrelated.

CBD promotes endocannabinoid tone by reducing activity in an overexcited ECS, while increasing activity when the system is overloaded with THC, or otherwise out of kilter. Earlier in the post, we briefly talked of how the concentration of cannabinoid receptors is reduced when the body becomes tolerant to THC. A study on rats in revealed that receptor concentration could be increased through CBD treatment. The experiment involved administering 10mg dose of CBD to rats.

Brain scans found receptor density increases between 10 and 20 percent in sections of the brain. But from the studies that are available and the anecdotal musings of cannabis users, we can tell that CBD and THC are polar opposites when it comes to their effects on the endocannabinoid system. Of course, after deciding that you should start cannabinoid cycling to solve your tolerance problems, the question arises about how often you should switch up your cannabinoids.

Many cannabis users have reported that cannabinoid cycling has immeasurably improved their cannabis consumption. One user on a forum said that they experimented with taking high-CBD strains one week and then high-THC strains the next.
