This practice will help keep your digestive tract strong and on point. Throughout the day, you can also drink hot ginger tea, fresh or dried, both work great at warming and strengthening your digestive system. During the meal, eating strategically can help avoid digestive upset. As a general rule, if you are eating fruit at any point, it's best to have it 30 minutes before a meal. Otherwise, it will sit on top of all your heavy foods, creating a major traffic jam in the digestive tract.
During your meal, eat your protein and carbs first, and your veggies last. Practice portion control, it is always best to have a pause between smaller meals, than to eat a very large one all at once.
This is often overlooked and is a major cause of acid reflux and digestive upset. I recently fought off a cold in one day with this drink. Iquitos is located at the basin of the Amazon Rainforest. Over pharmaceutical drugs come from plant-derived sources. As a healer who works with plant medicine, you can imagine my excitement to travel to the Amazon. The invitation came from a colleague at Emperor's College, where I'm completing my Doctoral degree.
This colleague just completed her Capstone research on combining Acupuncture with Ayahuasca for the treatment of Depression, and designed a retreat for some of her patients in Iquitos, Peru.
I came along for the retreat, with plans of treating patients daily in between other healing modalities, while also learning more about plant medicine from the Amazon region. The jungle experience was unlike anything I've ever experienced.
I had the honor of working with Shipibo shamans, who offered enlightening spiritual, as well as practical, insight. I participated in traditional ceremonies with them, and had an enriching learning experience.
I performed a couple of treatments, but mainly I worked with plants. I completed multiple plant diets, plant diets facilitate healing and offer knowledge and wisdom for those who decide to work with them.
Plant diets are often a part of a healer's initiation into working with plants and the healing arts. The dietary items often included juice fasts, superfood smoothies and fresh, local and organic produce, grains and legumes.
Other visitors were completing gallbladder flushes, liver detoxes, fasting and other plant diets, while participating in medicine ceremonies. I was both amazed and impressed with the nutritional resources that were available, and how much healing was taking place all around me.
There is something very special about the jungle, especially when you can slow down enough, isolate yourself and just be. It was a very profound journey for me to be able to feel the power of the jungle and the plants all around me. It is no wonder so many people are flocking to jungle retreats, they soothe and center the soul.

California Acupuncture Licensing Exam, a board exam administered by the California Acupuncture Board, the governing body over licensed acupuncturists in California. This exam MUST be successfully passed in order to practice acupuncture in the wonderful state of California. I took an online review class, and was part of an amazing study group, two key things that helped me pass.
Oh, and I pretty much sequestered myself in my home for those 3 months prior to the exam; doing nothing but studying for hours, yoga, meditation, eating, studying some more and repeating this everyday up until the exam It takes about a month to get those results I am waiting to receive my license in the mail to practice.
I am waiting to receive my license number to apply for malpractice insurance, apply for an NPI number and waiting for this number for a whole bunch of other things. The CAB states that it can take weeks to receive the license in the mail, it's only been 2 so far. I have passed 2 out of 4 so far! Lastly, I am also in the process of setting up my business. As Healthcare Practitioners, we are also business owners and that involves a whole other set of skills and legalities that can get confusing and downright frustrating at times.
Luckily, I had great business and marketing training in undergrad and many resources available to aid my business savvy. Here's hoping that all goes smoothly! November is also the beginning of the Holiday season, and with that a lot of eating and drinking and being merry. Diabetes has become very common…even I recently got told I was pre-diabetic by my doctor. How's that for awareness…thanks November!
Friends and family were shocked, they told me "but you eat so healthy! This is not a death sentence and it doesn't mean that because you're Native, Black or Latino you're getting Diabetes.
It just means we need to take extra precautions to avoid it. They're not so bad, actually. So here ya go:. Diabetes Mellitus is a condition in which the body does not properly metabolize sugar. This is usually due to the pancreas not producing enough or efficient insulin. Insulin is a hormone that controls blood sugar levels.
With the insulin unable to control blood sugar levels, the result is excess sugar in the blood stream, or hyperglycemia. The most prominent symptoms are excess thirst, frequent urination, prolonged wound healing, and circulation problems leading to numbness and tingling of the hands and feet. Complications include blindness, heart disease, kidney failure and neuropathies.
Diabetes is not something to take lightly. Avoiding or limiting sugar, especially processed sugar - as I stated before, Diabetes is a condition that involves too much sugar in the blood stream. Eating frequent smaller meals throughout the day - I'm sure you've heard this one before.
However, it's especially harmful to go long periods without eating, because as I mentioned, Diabetes is affected by the digestive process. By eating frequent smaller meals throughout the day, as opposed to one or two large meals spread widely apart, your pancreatic secretions, such as insulin, are much more efficient and can work properly to maintain the balance in your sugar levels. Eat a low-fat diet high in complex carbohydrates - a diet rich in complex carbohydrates such as unrefined grains, vegetables and legumes and low in fat can restore the proper functioning of the pancreas and bring insulin and therefore, sugar levels back into balance.
Exercise - exercising for about minutes per day, times per week has significant benefits. I know I don't need to tell you, because you already know weight management, heart disease prevention, stroke prevention, boosts immunity, anti-aging, etc.
In diabetic patients, it has shown to improve their circulation, but it can also help to prevent neuropathies. Plus, it makes you feel awesome! Another one with countless benefits that I'm sure you already know.
I have already incorporated all of these into my daily life. It's not that bad and it's not that hard. It just takes a little commitment and discipline. Start today or start tomorrow, but just do it! Cannabis is thought to sharpen up T-cells, which helps them spot and kill viruses — essential for HIV patients. Research into the herpes virus has found that some cannabis compounds stop infected, foreign cells from replicating inside the body.
Human trials have identified that these compounds improve insulin sensitivity. Cannabis has been used as an alternative medicine for headaches for hundreds of years, up until the herb was banned in the 20th century. Not all headaches are the same, however tension headaches and migraines are often medicated successfully through marijuana. High-THC strains ease headaches by giving the user a euphoric boost, letting them forget about the pain, whereas high-CBD strains work on reducing pain perception in the endocannabinoid system.
THC is a potent analgesic when microdosed, and in such quantities the hallucinogenic chemical will not make you high. The pain-relieving properties of CBD are also well-documented.
CBD is not considered to have psychoactive effects in the normal sense, although some argue that the mood-influencing effects are technically psychoactive. Some patients find that larger doses of THC actually increase pain. Child epilepsy patients and their parents are enjoying a new lease of life thanks to the development of cannabis medication — a variety of non-psychoactive and THC-containing oils are benefitting patients with rare disorders to an extent that current treatments have been unable to. Now, a systematic review into the effect of medical cannabis on childhood epilepsy has produced results overwhelmingly in favor of the plant.
A number of previously untreatable and life-threatening conditions are now being successfully combatted. The team, led by Emily Stockings, considered 30 observational studies and six randomized controlled trials in the overall review. The paper showed that non-psychoactive cannabidiol CBD was especially useful in treating various types of childhood epilepsy.
With users unable to get high from using CBD, these forms of cannabis treatment are more viable for pediatric patients than THC options.
A recommendation of 20mg CBD daily for every 20kg of body weight was given by the review, which showed that the compound reduced epileptic seizures among participants by at least 50 percent. Frustratingly, while the Sydney research was relatively comprehensive, only one in six of the studies were of clinical trials involving placebo treatments , the rest was merely observational research. Observational research has a reputation for being less reliable than clinical research. For a study to carry true weight, the tests must be double-blinded, placebo-controlled and randomized. With the Controlled Substances Act still classing cannabis as a Schedule I drug with no medicinal value, it is difficult for the required research to be conducted.
Researchers have to wade through the bureaucracy stifling studies on cannabis. Finding patients willing to be studied on and accessing federal funds are two of the trickiest obstacles for researchers to overcome.

Psoriasis is painful and itchy, with patients left in discomfort due to inflammation and swelling. Psoriasis patients are more likely to develop psoriatic arthritis and mental health complications.
Just under one in three psoriasis patients end up with the former. The pain, fatigue and insomnia caused by psoriasis is an unhelpful triumvirate which contribute to poor mental health. Eczema is an umbrella term used to refer to a multitude of skin conditions with symptoms of dry and itchy skin. More than 30 million Americans have some kind of eczema, equating to more than 10 percent of the population.
Skin inflammation can occur on any part of the body, but the red rashes and irritation is typically most common inside the elbows, behind the knees and on the face, hands and feet. Children are often more affect than adults. Scratching eczema-affected areas just makes matters worse, as the skin becomes raw, swollen and hence more sensitive.
While not entirely certain, doctors have reached a consensus that eczema results from an overreaction of immune cells located in the skin. Pollen and soap can spark the inflammation which causes this unwanted immune response, in addition to pet dander.
There is no cure for eczema with steroids, the most commonly prescribed medication, only able to manage symptoms. Such treatments have varied success rates and often have side effects. In recent times, CBD oil has emerged as a popular treatment for both psoriasis and eczema, thanks to its interactions with the endocannabinoid system ECS. The ECS was discovered in the s, and scientists have found that the network of chemicals and receptors is in charge of regulating inflammation, pain, mood, sleep, appetite and crucially — in the cases of eczema and psoriasis — immune system function.
The endocannabinoids found in the ECS are naturally-produced chemicals which bare a likeness to the cannabinoids found in cannabis — CBD is an example of a non-psychoactive cannabinoids.

Many people say that having a break from cannabis now and again is important, for both health and tolerance purposes. For medicinal users in particular, the last thing you want to do is stop taking your medication and risk symptoms returning. Withdrawal symptoms may be a concern for recreational users, who would perhaps prefer to micro-dose than take a cannabis sabbatical.
